What is Barefoot Peace Walk?

IRT organised the Barefoot Peace Walk for the first time in 2009 to raise awareness about the rebel group the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). Our local partners in Yambio, South Sudan, started this walk three years ago, and we copied them here in London, and Gulu and Lira in Uganda to show solidarity. Out in Northern Uganda people are still completely traumatised by the LRA and they asked us to help raise awareness about it.

The walk is not so much a political walk as such, it is awareness raising and bringing people together in this quite unusual event of walking barefoot around London!

Over the past three years, hundreds came to walk barefoot* through Central London. They helped us raise awarenss about the group that caused so many problems for our own beneficiaries in the Central East African region, especially northern Uganda and South Sudan where we support projects. It is in support of these people we are walking, and it is their story we are telling.

The walk takes place in Central London, going past famous London high-lights such as Trafalgar Square, Whitehall and Downing Street and of course the Houses of Parliament.

As well as addressing serious issues, Barefoot Peace Walk is also a unique and fun event to attend. We always have great musicians and speakers attending the after event.

Watch these short videos we made for Barefoot Peace Walk 2010 to explain what the LRA is about and also show you what it's like to be part of Barefoot Peace Walk

 *Walking barefoot is not compulsory.
