News update: Trouble increases in South Sudan
Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at 04:07PM
Increasing numbers of people are fleeing a border area of Southern Sudan following recent attacks from rebel group the 'Lord's Resistance Army'. The UNCHR has emphasised the importance of providing aid and security for the influx of people moving to the camps in an increasingly unstable region. The southern region of Sudan is showing increasing signs of returning to the bloody conflict that existed before the 2005 peace deal that ended the 22 year civil war. Clashes continue in the region between the Lou and Jakany branch of the Nuer people. It is believed that there have been more deaths from the violence over the past months in South Sudan than in the western region of Darfur. All measures must now be taken to ensure the safety of the refugees and internally displaced people within this region who, despite the increasingly volatile situation, do not wish to move again with the rainy season soon to come. by James Nuthall
