News update: Civilians continue to suffer from fighting in DRC

Sustained fighting in the South Kivo region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to force thousands of civilians out of the area. It is estimated that 56,000 civilians have been displaced since mid-July. This comes as a result of clashes between DRC government and Rwandan rebels in the area. It has been reported that on 29th July, the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda looted a village and targeted its only hospital. It is clear that greater aid is needed for the growing level of displaced people in DRC. This comes after the UN Secretary General pledged to do his best to give assistance during a visit to the country earlier this year. During this visit representatives of the displaced stated that in order for people to be helped to return home they would need aid in the form of food, household goods, agricultural kits and materials for building shelters. While political stability may be a long way off, the immediate aid needed for the people of DRC is simple and effective. by James Nuthall
