The
International Refugee Trust was founded in July 1989 by the late
Father Doheny, a missionary priest based in West Africa, who had
direct experience with refugees overseas.
MISSION
STATEMENT
The
International Refugee Trust is a registered charity that helps refugees
overseas. We fund small projects that save lives and help refugees
face the future. Our projects
tackle real problems with practical solutions. Projects are run
by local people and encourage independence. We provide medical care,
food, education and training, and particularly help children, women
and the elderly.
WHAT
MAKES IRT UNIQUE...
What
makes International Refugee Trust special is its support of
small projects that benefit forgotten refugees. Refugees who, after
the initial crisis, are no longer deemed to be newsworthy.
IRT
has the courage to focus and stick with the support of small projects
because we have seen the value and need for them. Small projects
increasingly have difficulty finding funding, but small projects
identified and managed by local people are capable of providing
appropriate and well-targeted aid. We know from experience that
small projects not only work well, but also cut out the possibility
of funds being misused or going astray.
