Talk LRA please, Mr President!

Mr and Mrs Obama arriving in the UK.

Today is not only the first day of President Obama's State Visit to the UK, it is also exactly one year ago when he signed into law the bipartisan LRA Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act, which committed the US to help civilians in central East Africa threatened by the LRA. Unfortunately, not much has happened since then.

In the UK we are campaigning hard to convince MPs that action needs to be taken NOW to stop this humanitarian crisis. Jane Bussmann and Resolution:Possible are among those who are now pushing for Prime Minister David Cameron to give real consideration to what contribution the UK can make towards resolving the LRA issue.

As President Obama and Mr Cameron will be talking about the numerous pressing issues that are happening around the globe, we hope that they will take a moment to discuss the LRA and hopefully come to an agreement that by pulling together they can make a difference.

Obama and Cameron were quoted by The Times yesterday, saying "When the United States and Britain stand together, our people and people around the world can become more secure and more prosperous. [...] It is a perfect alignment of what we both need and what we both believe. And the reason it remains strong is because it delivers time and again."

Brilliant, let's see it!

Unfortunately their words are mostly aimed at the unrest in the Arab world at the moment, as was Hilary Clinton's talk with William Hague yesterday. However, we urge them not to forget about humanitarian crisis such as that of the LRA, which may not be a 'hot topic' and not be on the news every second of the day, but is nonetheless a real atrocity.
