Small projects in Southern Sudan Run by the Comboni Sisters
On account of the long-running civil war between the north and south of Sudan, many southern Sudanese have fled their homes to other, safer parts of southern Sudan. There is some hope that peace may come to the area, but while the problems persist in the Darfur region of western Sudan, a final peace agreement cannot be signed. Meanwhile the people of the area live in difficult conditions with almost no infrastructure - few roads, no electricity, little education and healthcare.
•Girls’ hostel, Yambio
It is very difficult for girls to have access to education in southern Sudan because there are so few schools and those that do exist cater mainly for boys. The Comboni Sisters have built a hostel for girls in Yambio so that they can attend the girls' school there without having to travel large and dangerous distances every day. IRT has paid for a security fence for the perimeter of the hostel as well as furniture and solar power for lighting.
• Women’s Centre, Nzara
The Comboni Sisters run this centre which helps local women with income-generating activities such as sewing and squeezing palm seeds in order to produce oil from which they then make soap. Up till now they had no proper shelter from rain and sun. IRT has funded the construction of a proper building.
• Teaching and Nursing Training in Uganda for Sisters returning to Sudan
IRT is funding the education of Sudanese Sisters in nursing and teaching so that they can return to Sudan to help their own people. The photo shows Sr. Julia who has returned to Yambio – here she is with the bike funded by IRT. We also provided money for a motorbike so that the Sisters can more easily reach the people they are helping in the area.
